Treks for Vets
Outdoor adventure for ASU student veterans
Treks for Vets provides outdoor adventure experiences for veterans, focusing on nature-based activities as a way to build community and strengthen well-being. This immersive wilderness program gives student veterans the chance to recharge, reimagine, reinvigorate and reconnect with fellow veterans who share similar experiences.
Following their first year of studies, ASU student veterans are invited to take part in a trek at one of Arizona’s wilderness settings. The goal is to help veterans stay the course in their studies and complete their degree while gaining tools to support mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health.
Why it matters
Transitioning from military to civilian life is a unique experience. Some veterans seek purpose, while others look for community and resources to help chart their next steps. Treks for Vets was created in 2019 as a student success and retention initiative and continues to provide that much-needed network.
Based on the principles of wilderness therapy, the program blends eco-psychology, physical challenges, philosophical discussions and camaraderie. During the retreat, veterans participate in guided hikes, reflective readings and group discussions. The result is a perspective shift, a sense of community, and often a lasting impact on personal and academic success.
